Charles Betout was the principal costume designer for the Comedie-Francaise in Paris for twenty years until his death in 1939. This is costume was designed for the 1926 production of “Maitresse Du Roi” in New York City. Betout was renowned for his historical research, his costumes were in high demand for operatic productions, especially period or historic works. Each original watercolor is individually mounted in a black and gold frame. Some of the completed costumes designed by Betout are part of the collection at the Centre National du Costume de Scène, the French National Stage Costume Museum in Moulins, France.
