The scene is set in an oasis in the desert. The sky and water are made of a beautiful shimmering blue/green velvet. The desret sand is made up a a multitude of minute knots of cotton thread. In the background are a pair of pyramids and palmtrees, and in the foreground a cluster of cacti.
The saint is kneeling before the lion and tenderly removing the thorn from his paw.
The picture is most likely an ecclesiastical work of art and is a real labour of love. It is beautifully done and has a special, moving quality.
It is in its original wood and plaster frame, and protected by a glass pane.
