Black ebonised 19th c., Napoleon III style ormolu cabinet. Like many cabinets from this period the cabinet is heavily embellished with ormolu mouldings and decorative patterns with ancient Greco-Roman inspired motifs. The empire style was introduced during Napoleon III reign in France, where he attempted to portray victory and war in his designs. Throughout the edges of side and front panels are acanthus insired framings, all made from gilded bronze. The top of the cabinet is covered with a stunning white marble plate, below the marble on the corners are small gilded cherub mask mouldings featuring c-scroll cartouche. In the space between both cherub mask is an impressive floral frieze framing the top panel of a cabinet. The frieze is a long rectagle with 13 oval spaces filled with gerbera daisies and smaller flowers surround the circles. Moreover, the sides of the cabinet are supported by 2 pillars, both of them include Egyptian and Greek elements. The top of the pillar, where the volute rests, resemble the corinthian column with acanthus leaves and the base resemble egyptian style column with palm tree motif. The door are adorned with a gilt bronze elements such as: daisy mounts in the corners, front door framing edges, escutcheon and the main feature of the door – the grant medallion with a cherub driffting between clouds while holding flower wreath. The medallion has an oval shape and is decorated artistically with ribbons on top along with laurel wreath at the bottom, behind the medallion is a gothic inspired quatrefoil with latice pattern resembling flowers or lucky four leaf clover. The apron of the cabinet is decorated with an ormolu bronze acanthus moulding hanging from a cornice like form. The cabinet is supported by 4 round shaped legs, decorated with ormolu. The shape itself is very characteristical to most cabinets made in this epoque in this style. The distinctive motifs of Empire style are evident in every element of this magnificent cabinet.
