19th Cenury Antique French Hand Painted Floral Tole Tray

Offered is a lovely 19thc French Hand Painted Tole tray. This black tray has a hand painted floral center decoration that is surrounded by four floral sprays at the edge. The rim of the tray is beautifully accented in gold.

From the French “Tole Pente du Lac”, tole painting refers to applying paint and lacquer to tin.
It began as a way to prevent common household objects from rusting. Tole now generally refers to decorated tin and iron wares from the late 19th to the mid 20th century.

This tray is in very nice antique condition. It does show wear commensurate with age, but still displays beautifully. There is an area of missing paint on the front near one of the floral edge sprays, but this does not take away from the beauty of this piece. It lays flat. The floral paint decoration is soft and has a lovely patina. This tray would look great on it’s own, or mixed in with your french country display to make a perfect vignette. You could use it as a serving tray, or to display your best champagne coupes. There is a price tag on the back from a previous owner’s purchase.
