Elegant and delicate cachepot made in Porcelaine de Paris; the shape is extremely pleasant and functional; it has a truly exceptional floral decoration, the flowers are hand-painted in a fine and detailed way; the base and the upper edge, always handmade, are black and thus create a pleasant contrast; on the opposite side instead, the decoration is very simple and only monochrome; the object is in good condition, only on the base you can notice small lack of color (see photo). Produced in France in Napoleon III style between 1870 and 1880 in respect of ancient traditions and raw material (kaolin) by master craftsmen; “Porcelain de Paris” is a term that refers collectively to the various porcelain decorating workshops and studios within and around Paris, France. It is not the name of any single company or producer and is usually applied to craft objects of excellent workmanship produced between the mid and late 19th century. The makers are in some cases obscure and generally unknown or have created only a few rare pieces. Antique porcelain objects from Paris are the most desired by collectors and are present in many museums around the world. Measures: Width cm. 30, depth cm. 18, height cm. 15. The box decorated with a base of cobalt blue with gild scrollwork decoration throughout. The lid featuring a large painted panel with a classical scene with two cupid like cherubs and a female figure after Sevres painter George Rochet signed Geo. Rochet. The sides decorated extensively with gilt scrollwork and floral borders. The base signed with ‘Sevres’ interlaces L’s and an iron-red Chateau Des Tuileries mark. The interior of the box is further painted with brightly coloured blossoming flowers to both the inside of the lid and the base of the box. The box mounted with decorated ormolu to the lip of the lid and base, dating to the late 19th early 20th century circa 1900.

Sevres porcelain (Manufacture nationale de Sèvres) is one of the principal European porcelain factories, located in Sèvres, Hauts-de-Seine, France. Originally Vincennes porcelain which was founded in 1740 it moved to Sèvres in 1756 and has been owned by the French crown or government since 1759. It replaced Meissen porcelain as the standard-setter among European porcelain factories, retaining this position until at least the 19th century.

Chateau des Tuileries, the Tuileries Palace was a royal and imperial palace in Paris which stood on the right bank of the river Seine which is located directly in front of the Louvre. It was the Parisian residence of most French monarchs, from Henry IV to Napoleon III, until it was burned by the Paris Commune in 1871.

Ormolu is the technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold–mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold coating. The French refer to this technique as bronze doré and in English it is often referred to as gilt bronze. It is a finishing technique which adds an overall gold look to any object without the massive cost and impracticality of making an object out of solid gold. Mercury was outlawed in the 1830’s in France however it was still used until the early 1900s.

Creil-Montereau faience is a faïence fine, a lead-glazed earthenware on a white body originating in the French communes of Creil, Oise and of Montereau, Seine-et-Marne, but carried forward under a unified direction since 1819. Emulating the cream ware perfected by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s, and under the artistic and technical direction of native English potter entrepreneurs, the faience of Creil-Montereau introduced the industrial technique of transfer printing on pottery in France and raised it to a high state of perfection during its peak years in the 19th century.

Another example, presented at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, in 1898, and numbered 4060, was shown with three other vases: Hercules and Omphale, Children with Butterflies (in the collection of the Petit Palais, Paris), and Music.

Resting on a square base, this pair of vases is decorated with a group of putti who encircle its lower section. These children, who look frightened, run in all directions, seemingly to escape some imminent danger. The ceramicist, who carefully studied how he was going to present the figures, succeeded by placing each one in a different position: some are running with outstretched arms; some are on the ground, probably having fallen on their terrified flight; still others look upward in a quest to understand the cause of their anguish: the two winged demons placed on either side of the top of the vase. These two small monsters are finished with a greenish glaze that gives them a hideous appearance. The title of the work, “Sauve qui peut” (“Every man for himself!”) is written twice on the underside of the vase and explains the iconography. The children, who sense they are in danger, attempt to escape as quickly as possible.

Louis Carrier-Belleuse first showed these vases in a plaster version at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts of 1896. They then reappeared at the Salon of 1898, this time in stoneware, with three other vases that formed a series: Hercules and Omphale, Children with Butterflies and Music. It was on this occasion, in 1900, that the vase was illustrated in the review La Décoration ancienne et moderne.

Son and pupil of the sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887), Louis Carrier-Belleuse studied with Gustave Boulanger and Alexandre Cabanel at the Beaux-Arts academy. He began his career as a painter at the Salon of 1870 and started exhibiting his sculpture in 1889. Early on, he became interested in the industrial arts: for several years, he worked at the Sèvres factory with his father who had been the artistic director since 1875. Then, in 1877, thanks to Théodore Deck, he acquired his first training as a ceramicist, an experience that would determine the path he would eventually pursue: he became the artistic director of the Choisy-le-Roi faience manufactory. He created numerous models for them and often won awards, notably a medal in 1896, the year he showed the plaster version of “Every man for himself!”.

As artistic director of the Choisy-le-Roi faience manufactory, he designed numerous models of the highest quality, including this pair of vases, which is an exceptional example of his artistry.
